Under 16's to Youth Transition Event 6th May

May 05, 2017

There will be a 16's to Youth transition event held on Sunday 6th May. - The event will be a festival format and no "winners and losers".

The event is aimed to encourage clubs to start the transition for players going from Under 16's to Youth. Clubs are invited to enter a team containing both current 16's and 1st year Youth players (Ie, Under 17's).

* If there are clubs who only have Under 16's teams and no current Youth team, you are more than welcome to enter so your players can have an experience of playing against current Youth players.

The event will also be attended by Dragons Rugby Under 18's staff and will act as a club identification window for the regional 18's team this season.

* To ensure that the festival is used for the transition of players, clubs will be required to submit a team sheet prior to the festival and for each game played during the festival. - Clubs will be required to highlight Under 16's players on these team sheets.

Details are:

Date: 6th May 2018

Venue: Caerphilly Centre of Sporting Excellence

Time: 9:30 onwards

Title: Under 16 to Youth Transition Festival

Format: 15-a-Side

For clubs wishing to enter into the festival, please send your interest to: by no later than 27th April 2018.

If there are any questions about this event or about transition from 16's to Youth, please feel free to get in contact.

June 06, 2018

The Under 18s finished 2nd in the competition this year after a highly successful campaign, finishing behind the powerful Scarlets team. The programme started in June in earnest with the coaches and players working hard to ensure the group were prepared for the season to come.

It was a year in which we have accelerated players through the pathway and have been able to expose more players to high level rugby. Will Reed came up from the U16s programme to feature in all of the second rounds of games and, despite being only 16, will benefit hugely from the experience next year as he looks to become one of the leaders of the group.

We also moved Rio Dyer, Dan Babos, Taine Basham and Will Griffiths into senior rugby, with 3 having already made their first team debuts. This created opportunities for Dafydd Buckland, Garin Price, Zac Hewlett and Ewan Rosser, all of which performed well and are now in the academy group and travelled to Scotland with Wales 18s early in February as a result.

At age grade level we also became one of the only regions to appoint a full time U18s coach in Matt O’Brien. Matt had been working in our pathway for a number of years as a volunteer and has strong ties with both
Gwent rugby and the region and his appointment, along with the hard work of Sam Hobbs, Gareth Lewis and Lewis Evans, has had a significant impact on the quality of our players at U18s level.

We have had 13 players selected for the initial Wales U18s squad and, at the time of writing, 8 players making their debuts for Wales.

We have seen a number of players fast tracked into the senior programme this year as Bernard tries to provide exposure to our younger players so they understand the demands of the professional game. That has

meant that we have given full debuts to 14 players this year all of which are at different stages in their development, and they will benefit massively from the experience.

I know there are detractors of this method but the coaching team are brave to expose many players now in the knowledge that the next two years will be a transitional period for them as they develop technically, tactically and, most importantly, as young men.

Finally, I’d like to thank the volunteers that give up countless hours to support our programme. All of which deserve a mention.

They are

Under 18s

Matt O’Brien, Sam Hobbs, Tom Cole, Lewis Evans, Nigel Way, Paul Taylor, Lewis Hudd, Brad Cole, Owen Jones, Graham O’Riordan

Junior Academies

Rob Sidoli, Matthew Jones, Scott Matthews, James Leadbetter

Under 16s

Chris Garrett, Brad Hayward, Ross Palmer, Dan Clements, Gareth Betts, James Jeune, Jacob Allen, Jamie Sollis, Gareth Richards, Hywel Jenkins, Rhys Buckley, Jason Williams, Huw Jones, Kristian Gay, Jonny Harper, Jack Corney

Thanks very much for all of your support this year.
